The Swedish royal family has published a new official photograph of the heir to the Swedish throne, Crown Princess Victoria, Duchess of Västergötland, with her husband, Prince Daniel, and their children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar. The distaff side of the family is dressed in folk costume in the colours of the Swedish flag, and the dress, as one might have suspected, is not quite historical: the outfit was designed personally by Queen Silvia in 1983 on the basis of the "folk" designs of the artist Märta Jörgensen, who in 1903 devised a standard folk costume for everyday wear, drawing on a multitude of authentic village examples from the early nineteenth century. Today this type of costume is popular among Swedish women, who wear it not only on holidays
