The shocking news of the ban on cultural events in Moscow from 13 November caught me quite literally at the presentation of Sati Spivakova's new book "Nescuchnaya klassika" \[Classics Without the Boredom\] at the Dostoevsky bookshop and reading club. The number of guests was incredible, and the motley list of admirers of Sati's work (Ksenia Solovyova, Katya Mukhina, Sasha Terekhov,..) can perhaps be compared with the roll-call of her distinguished subjects. As the publisher Elena Shubina observed, this is not merely a collection of interviews but a book about music in the lives of very different people, from Maya Plisetskaya and Charles Aznavour to Mikhail Shemyakin and Dina Rubina. It is hard to imagine the sheer unwieldiness of the task of making one slim volume out of 315 programmes. Sati relates that the method was this: every chapter is a conversation, but before the conversation comes an essay, a portrait of the person. "There could have been more, but Elena Danilovna \[Shubina\] pronounced the legendary phrase: 'the spine won't hold.'" What is unusual and very valuable is that at the end of each chapter there is a soundtrack of its main hero. At first glance, the result is a classics without the boredom: moderately instructive and moderately unboring.
