Today in Moscow we bade farewell to the distinguished scholar Ekaterina Georgievna Devlet. Doctor of Historical Sciences, Academic Secretary of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Centre for Palaeoart, Professor Ekaterina Devlet was a leading specialist in early forms of art and in Mesoamerican art. It is hard to describe the loss that the scholarly world has suffered with the departure of Ekaterina Georgievna, just as it is hard to convey the loss felt by all those who were close to her, who worked with her, who knew her and had the good fortune to be among her circle.

For me personally this is a great loss and a great grief. Ekaterina Georgievna was one of the chief teachers of my life. I cannot express how much she did for me, how she supported and guided me, how precise and far-sighted her advice always was, how patiently and caringly she treated her students and pupils. I owe my dissertation to her attention, her immense scholarly breadth, her sensitivity and her boundless kindness. I shall never forget the hours spent in her office at the Institute of Archaeology, our telephone conversations and our correspondence. We have lost a person truly devoted to scholarship, kind, wonderfully educated, of immense spirit. I grieve with all my heart.

I am not saying goodbye: in the coming days I shall certainly share my most precious possession, fragments of the work of a woman, a scholar and a human being whose memory will remain with me for ever, as, I am sure, with each of her pupils, colleagues and friends.
