Pope Francis I and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia held a videoconference today. It was the first conversation between the two bishops since their personal meeting in Havana in 2016\. They discussed the possibility that Patriarch Kirill might meet Pope Francis again this summer. Francis I spoke today of the Christian awareness of the importance of peace and of the role of spiritual shepherds in doing everything possible to bring peace about.

I noted the Pope's words that he and Kirill are pastors of one and the same Holy People, who believe in God, in the Holy Trinity, in the Most Holy Mother of God: "for this we must unite in our striving to help the world, to help those who suffer, to seek the paths of peace."

Francis stressed that the Church must use not the language of politics but the language of Jesus. According to a statement from the Russian Orthodox Church, the two sides discussed in detail the situation in Ukraine, the humanitarian aspects of the crisis and the actions of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church to overcome its consequences, and also emphasised the exceptional importance of the negotiation process
