# Today one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the lovely Almaty, is gripped by alarming and terrible events

Today one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the lovely Almaty, is gripped by alarming and terrible events. Kazakhstan, which I had always thought the safest place on earth, is shaken by disorder: public and government buildings are being seized, and there is gunfire, banditry, looting and violence on the streets of its cities. Bitter as it is to say, there are casualties. I know that at this moment millions of Kazakhstanis are sitting in their homes, anxious and afraid. With all my heart I wish this bountiful land a peaceful sky, and I wish the people of Kazakhstan to come through this troubled time unharmed, to keep themselves and their loved ones safe, and by all means to preserve the achievements of many years of peaceful, creative life, and not to allow the prosperity and the peaceful, fraternal coexistence to be struck out and destroyed. I pray for the swiftest possible restoration of calm, lawful order and the normalisation of every sphere of life. I place my hope in the wisdom, resolve and diplomacy of President Tokayev, and in the contribution, however modest, of all who can help to restore peace in the republic.
