The best-known portrait of King Henry VIII today is a replica of a group portrait by Hans Holbein from 1537\. The mural on the wall of the royal palace of [Whitehall](https://theparnassian.com/v-knige-ob-odnom-iz-prekrasneishikh-dvortsov-evropy-uaitkholle-kotoryi-na-moment-svoego-sushchestvovaniia-schitalsia-samym-bolshim-v-mire-natknulsia-na-opisanie-prichudlivoi-igrushki-ve/?ref=theparnassian.com) showed Henry VIII with his father [Henry VII](https://theparnassian.com/pretenziia-romanovykh-na-prestol-osnovyvalas-na-tom-chto-byla-takaia-devitsa-koshkina/?ref=theparnassian.com) standing behind him, and, on the other side, Queen [Jane Seymour](https://theparnassian.com/mog-li-sifilis-byt-prichinoi-durnogo-nrava-genrikha-viii/?ref=theparnassian.com) with Queen [Elizabeth of York](https://theparnassian.com/nadgrobie-genrikha-vii-i-elizavety-kotoraia-byla-docheriu-materiu-sestroi-plemiannitsei-i-suprugoi-korolei-anglii-i-iavliaetsia-predkom-vsekh-angliiskikh-i-shotlandskikh-korolei-s-xvi-v/?ref=theparnassian.com) standing behind her. Almost all portraits of Henry VIII since then have, one way or another, descended from Holbein's portrait. The mural perished in the fire that destroyed most of Whitehall in 1698\. The blaze is believed to have started because of linen left by a maid near the fire to dry. Of the original there survive part of a cartoon in the National Portrait Gallery in London and a copy that [Charles II](https://theparnassian.com/etot-khomiachok-v-plate-i-so-strannoi-shtuchkoi-na-shee-budushchii-angliiskii-korol-karl-ii-1630-1685-kotoryi-prikazhet-otkopat-ostanki-kromvelia-i-spodvizhnikov-i-chetvertovat-ikh/?ref=theparnassian.com) commissioned in 1667 from the Flemish artist Remigius van Leemput; today it is kept at Hampton Court Palace.
