The world's longest railway journey will take about 21 days and cover 18,755 km by train: from southern Portugal to Singapore. Such a trip has become possible thanks to the opening of the high-speed railway line from Kunming in China to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. At present, services on the Paris-Moscow and Moscow-Beijing routes are suspended because of the pandemic, but that does not stop devotees of the Darjeeling train and of tea from the samovar-style boiler at the end of the carriage from planning fantastic journeys, so long as they do not draw an upper berth. Numerous commentators draw attention to the reduction in carbon footprint when travelling by rail: a one-way flight over this distance would be equivalent to 1.67 tonnes of CO2, a journey by train only 0.08 tonnes
