The sabre was made in 1802 to Napoleon's order, after he had been proclaimed Consul for Life. The work was carried out by the master armourer Nicolas-Noël Boutet, who directed the state arms workshop at Versailles. The blade is decorated with images of Medusa, the Nemean Lion, Hercules and Mars.

In 1815, on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon presented the sabre to Marshal Emmanuel de Grouchy. Since then the relic has been kept in the Grouchy family.

Napoleon's belongings continue to cause a stir among collectors. In 2023 a bicorne hat was sold for $2 million. In 2007 a sword with gold inlay, which Napoleon wore at the Battle of Marengo, was sold for $6.5 million, a record price for a weapon sold at auction.
