«С НАМИ Б҃ГЪ. РАЗУМѢЙТЕ ЯЗЫЦЫ И ПОКОРѦЙТЕСѦ», that is, “God is with us. Understand, O nations, and submit yourselves”.

The quotation, in Church Slavonic, is from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah and is inscribed on the obverse of the medal “For the Pacification of Hungary and Transylvania”. The medal was instituted in connection with the Russian army’s campaign to suppress the revolution in Hungary in the summer of 1849\. On the obverse is the coat of arms of the Russian Empire, surmounted by a small image of the radiant All-Seeing Eye.

In those years Russia established itself on the international stage, in the celebrated phrase of Nicholas I, in the guise of the “gendarme of Europe”.

There were proposals to strike commemorative medals like these for the Austrian troops as well, with the inscription planned simply as: “God is with us”. Prince Menshikov, however, suggested putting “God be with you” on the medals instead. In the end, the Austrian soldiers who had distinguished themselves were awarded numbered Crosses of St George.
