From 3 September, amendments to the Rosstandart order on the GOST for school uniform come into force. The relevant ministry, however, points out that "schools have the right to set their own requirements for the appearance, colour, cut and insignia of the uniform, taking into account the opinion of parents and pupils".

The GOST for the uniform is to serve as a set of general standard requirements for clothing, which schools may supplement with regulations of their own.

I see nothing untoward in this. And if the decisions of school administrations are agreed with parents' committees, so much the better.

On the whole, requirements set down in writing make it possible to dispose of a number of awkward questions, concerning religious dress in secular educational institutions, for example.

As for my own attitude to the uniform, in my school it was compulsory, and the requirements changed several times: from the general "dark below, white above" to quite specific blue suits of a single pattern. I remember that wearing a suit, a white shirt and a tie was pleasant, and it had no bearing on freedom of self-expression: school clubs, theatrical productions and olympiads offered self-expression in abundance.
