Archaeologists have discovered a ritual pyramid in the Karaganda region. The Bronze Age burial belonged to a noble dignitary, although no human remains have yet been found.

For about two months, archaeologists have been at work in the Karaganda steppe. The clearing of the site has now been completed, and the scholars have begun removing the earth from the central part of the burial. According to the expedition leader, Igor Kukushkin, Candidate of Historical Sciences and leading researcher at Karaganda State University, the pyramid belonged to a member of the hereditary nobility of the Begazy-Dandybai culture, dating to roughly the 14th to 12th century BC, reports the news agency Novosti-Kazakhstan.

“We are now removing the earth from the central part; before that we were clearing the surface so as to see the shape. What will be in the centre, we do not yet know,” Kukushkin explained to the agency.

The excavation site has also yielded a bronze knife, an arrowhead, needles, a considerable quantity of ceramic ware and the bones of domestic animals. No human remains have yet been found.

“We can call the find unique; nothing like it has yet been encountered in Kazakhstan. Such sites can be counted on the fingers of one hand, since the Begazy-Dandybai culture is found only in Kazakhstan and, for the most part, in its central region,” the expedition leader notes.

Igor Kukushkin hopes that next year the site will be included in the list of those to be restored, which could considerably speed up the archaeologists' work.
