otherwise known as the Wilton Diptych, made of two small panels joined by hinges and painted on both sides.

On the front, at left, we see the young King Richard II kneeling, accompanied by two saintly kings of England, Edward the Confessor (eleventh century) with the ring intended for John the Evangelist, and Edmund the Martyr (ninth century) with the arrow that killed him, together with John the Baptist, who holds a lamb. At right are the Virgin with the infant Christ and 11 angels wearing garlands of white roses. One of the angels carries the English national flag with the cross of Saint George.

Dated to 1395-1399, the diptych is in the National Gallery in London and is attributed to an unknown English or French artist, usually called the Master of the Wilton Diptych.

Whenever you hear the word “Gothic”, picture this masterpiece.
