The Pushkin Museum Has Been Given Light.

“What followed was very hard, I would say bloody, work, which only appears to be white,” Marina Loshak.

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is undergoing a re-display. You will not recognise the museum when you come to the main building. The saturated red and blue walls with their rich decoration are a thing of the past, as is the salon-style hang. The huge canvases have been lowered a level, and every picture has acquired a new angle of view and a new light.

The central idea is to fill the museum with natural light; combined with giving every exhibit its own display space, it makes the museum environment entirely different. As co-curator of the re-display Suriya Sadekova put it, at 109 years old the museum has stepped into the twenty-first century.

The museum's director Marina Loshak remarked that with the re-display the Pushkin Museum is trying to return to being a museum full of light. In her words, it is important that the museum's team, too, should refresh its sense of the collection.
