Read in a newspaper 19 years old how a British history teacher, Adrian Targett, learned that he shares mitochondrial DNA with Cheddar Man, found in Gough's Cave in 1903 and some 10,000 years old. What is more, Targett and his family had lived all their lives literally 800 metres from the spot where the skeleton was discovered.

It is usually written that the English teacher turned out to be a direct descendant of a hunter-gatherer of the Mesolithic period, but that is not quite so; it would be more accurate to say that the skeleton and the pedagogue share a maternal ancestor, that is, they are simply relations, separated by some 300 generations.
