*"There is nothing to be said about nihilism. Wait until this upper layer, torn away from the soil of Russia, has rotted through entirely. Do you know, it occurs to me that many of these very same scoundrel-youths, these rotting youths, will end by becoming genuine, firm adherents of the soil, purely Russian. As for the rest, let them rot. It will end with their falling silent too, in paralysis. But what scoundrels they are!..." "Why, I, for instance, was dreadfully eager to write about Olga Ivanova, from the trial over the forged Tambov shares, as a type of unconsciously ingrained nihilism in its most repulsive and complete form: a slip of a girl who, perhaps, had never even heard of nihilism, and to point to her as a sign of the times; yet I hesitated, and found it impossible to drag her before the judgement of society..."*
