The film was shot while Mosfilm was evacuated to Alma-Ata. At the same time the city was also sheltering, in evacuation, the collection of church textiles of the New Jerusalem Museum, the foremost assemblage of Russian antiquities of the seventeenth century. The film's production designers obtained permission to use museum exhibits on the set.

In the scene of Ivan IV's coronation we see the actor Alexander Mgebrov in the role of Pimen, Archbishop of Novgorod, wearing a genuine sakkos of the late seventeenth century, made of velvet, lace and threads of gold and silver, with a Deesis featuring the Apostle Andrew the First-Called.

"Pimen's sakkos" may be seen at the exhibition "Formula of Rus' 17/20" at the New Jerusalem Museum. Its distinctive feature is the integration of twentieth-century art, inspired by Russian antiquity, into the museum's main display, which consists of objects of Old Russian art, church furnishings and antiquities, chiefly of the seventeenth century.
