These are the mottoes of one of the most prestigious and respected honours in Europe, the dynastic Order of the Golden Fleece, founded on 10 January 1430 by Philip the Good. In the portrait from the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts, the duke is shown wearing the Order of the Fleece.

Over 490 years the appearance of the order has undergone some changes: the shape of the collar and the pendant itself, in the form of a sheepskin, have both altered. *The stylised letter “B” in the links of the chain is a firesteel.* Nevertheless, the order is still bestowed in two countries, Spain and Austria. The Spanish award is presented by King [Philip IV](https://theparnassian.com/segodnia-khoroshii-urozhai-na-naslednikov-moskvu-vot-posetil-velikii-kniaz-georgii-mikhailovich-syn-marii-vladimirovny-romanovoi-edinstvennoi-docheri-samoprovozglashennogo-glavy-rossiis/?ref=theparnassian.com), the Austrian by the head of the House of Habsburg, [Karl von Habsburg](https://theparnassian.com/na-deilimeil-vyshla-bolshaia-statia-o-cheliusti-gabsburgov/?ref=theparnassian.com).
