The reigning Queen of Spain (1833-1868), Isabella II, great-great-great-grandmother of the present King of Spain, Felipe VI, was known for her fiery temper and her easy way with men. She changed lovers as other women change gloves, while her openly despised husband was made to acknowledge the children born of her liaisons with officers, courtiers and men of the lower orders. Of her unfortunate husband,  
Infante Francisco de Asís de Borbón, Duke of Cádiz, who was a mere consort and had no powers whatever, she remarked: “What is one to say of a man on whom I have seen more lace than I wore on our wedding night?”
