Yesterday saw the opening at Garage of what is arguably the main event in the art world: the Second Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art. I am sure that colleagues on other channels will say more about the format: this time the artists were chosen on the personal recommendations of participants in the previous Triennial rather than by curatorial selection, so new social bearings, integration and horizontal ties are, in their way, exhibits of the triennial too. So far I have looked over the display only cursorily, since the ground floor was seething with a reception in honour of the Beautiful Night of All People, but what leaps to the eye is the rethinking of heritage, the interpretation of the fates of ordinary people, and the study of how traces of what is happening in politics and society show up in everyday life. All of it, though, needs to be seen more than once: Russian window surrounds framing the chthonic windows of a deep-rooted worldview, the memory of trees, the threefold nature of being, handkerchiefs soaked in tears and bearing the face of Tereshkova, shards of marble monuments laid out in a mosaic of topical statement, snakes, people, their interactions..
