Congratulations to all on the First of September! Even if you left the walls of school and university long ago, the symbolic start of a new academic year is a great holiday. And perhaps it deserves to be greeted with joy, for what in this life is more interesting than learning? We are all, in this world, no more than schoolchildren. Whatever your age, I wish you to look boldly to the future and not to fear the grim reaper standing in his mown clearing. Smile at him, and he will smile back, and perhaps even the fierce Cerberus at his feet will wag its little tail.

Painting by the Georgian artist Uchi Japaridze, “Grandfather's Pride”, 1955.
