I was lucky enough to stay in one of the most beautiful buildings in Monte Carlo. Formally, of course, this is France: the town of Beausoleil, founded in 1904, which was even proposed to be called Upper Monte Carlo. But in the end the name Monte-Carlo Supérieur went to the mayor's estate agency, while the commune was given the graceful name of Fair Sun. The town hangs over Monte Carlo itself, and the border between the two states runs straight through residential buildings.

My building is Le Riviera Palace, and from here opens one of the finest panoramas of the Côte d'Azur. A Belle Époque building with ochre façades and balustrades of blue majolica, it was built by the architect Georges Chedanne at the end of the 19th century, but that will tell you nothing. Not so the gem of the residential complex: an enormous 900-metre winter garden under a glass dome designed by Gustave Eiffel himself. In all of Beausoleil there is nothing more beautiful, and if you find yourself in these parts, write to me and I shall send you the code for the front door, so that you may see the multi-tiered winter garden with its rockery.
