The open letter of Metropolitan Ambrosios was deemed insulting to the Permanent Synod and to the entire episcopate of the Church of Greece.

In the letter, addressed to Archbishop Ieronymos and his fellow hierarchs, Metropolitan Ambrosios accuses the church leadership of silence while Greek society sinks into a moral and spiritual crisis. He asserts that the secular newspapers show more courage than the Synod itself, and writes that the church is silent while its faithful children are anxious and speak out on their own.

The metropolitan points to the removal of crosses from public buildings and the use of religious imagery in advertising, expresses alarm at the spread of neopagan rites in the armed forces, and calls the participation of one of the metropolitans in an interfaith choral evening in a synagogue a betrayal of the Orthodox faith. He also refers to reports of a bill recognising same-sex parenthood, to teachers' complaints about the religious illiteracy of schoolchildren, and to the presence of materials on the *\*public movement of certain minorities, banned in Russia,* in the state sex education programme for sixth-graders.

A considerable part of the letter is directed against the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whom the metropolitan, by his own account, has personally excommunicated. He reproaches the church for its silence over the introduction in Greece of digital identity cards and personal identification numbers, which, he claims, millions of citizens have refused. He also returns to his objections to the church circular of 2020, which during the pandemic led believers out of the churches instead of strengthening them spiritually.

The letter ends with an appeal to the Synod to lodge an official protest with the secular authorities, to give spiritual guidance to the faithful, and to condemn the hierarchs who have departed from their ministry.
