# I watched an estate agent's presentation of a 19th-century mansion in Scotland

I watched an estate agent's presentation of a 19th-century mansion in Scotland. The Americanisation of everyday life as it is. A house of more than 1,500 square metres, set in 12 hectares of land with a cottage, outbuildings and a glasshouse, is on sale for £4 million. It was astonishing to look inside and find a EUROREMONT (the Russian "Euro-standard" refurbishment), along with the typical nouveau riche fittings one sees in the houses of embezzling officials in anti-corruption investigations. Beautiful outside, anonymous within. Apart from a few historic spots, the house looks like the fantasy of a designer from "Kvartirny vopros" or "Dachny otvet" (Russian home-makeover TV shows). A nightmarish renovation has turned the Victorian interiors of a great baronial house into a hotel with laminate flooring, plastic curtain rails, walls painted to Pinterest renders, and countless identical rooms crammed with a mountain of capitalist tat. The building algorithms of The Sims can take a rest. What surprised me most was the chaise longue on a round plinth and the ubiquitous junk from interior shops, with its little horses, puppies and flowers. This is not even Etsy, it is pure Taobao.
