After the wedding ceremony on 14 May 1962, the Greek princess Sophia and the Spanish prince Juan Carlos (the future King and Queen of Spain) set off for the royal palace in Athens in a carriage drawn by six horses. The carriage is a far from ordinary one: it was built in the century before last in the workshops of Hermes, and belongs to the equipage commissioned in 1871 by the last legitimate pretender to the throne of France, the Duke of Bordeaux, Count of Chambord, for his solemn entry into Paris before his coronation, which, alas, never took place. The other carriages are still kept at Chambord today and are displayed in the rooms on the ground floor, while this one was acquired by the Greek royal court in 1889 and used on especially solemn occasions until 1962\. As for Sophia and Juan Carlos, they have lived long: 58 years together already, and happily!
