After the Revolution, the steamship “Nicholas II”, built in 1895, was renamed “Ilyich. In the course of her voyages the ship, laid down at a shipyard in the Scottish town of Dumbarton, sailed to the Far East, served as a floating industrial exhibition, represented Russian culture as an exhibition vessel in the ports of the Mediterranean, worked as a merchant ship, and carried White émigrés out of the country, Trotsky and his son among them. She remained in service until the age of 50, having survived the Great Patriotic War as one of the Lend-Lease ships. The “Nicholas II Ilyich” sank during repairs, in peacetime
