Portrait of the Reverend Thomas Gisborne and his wife Mary. A splendid umbrella, a cool dog and a remarkable likeness: do you not think so? He and his wife might be twins. People used to murmur that Gisborne had married for money: the girl from the wealthy Babington family was no beauty. A textbook specimen of the idle speculation of the common herd about who took which decision in his private life and why, as though one could marry only for beauty. They had eight children, and one of their sons even became a Member of Parliament. Gisborne's most important work was not poetry but the struggle against the slave trade.

Admittedly, not the most distinguished of sitters, and not the most remarkable portrait. But all the same, what a likeness!
