Remember Rupert, Stewie Griffin's beloved teddy bear from the brilliant show Family Guy? In fact, the name Rupert was not chosen at random: the detail is meant to underline Stewie's aristocratic bearing and his special position within a plain American family. Rupert Bear is a famous children's character in England, created as far back as 1920, with his own annual of Rupert's adventures published regularly since 1936\. Stewie's favourite toy thus points to his elitism and a certain attachment to the English cultural code, in contrast to the dim-witted family around him. And the way Stewie adores Rupert, placing him in a quite exceptional position relative to the household's inhabitants and his own belongings, accords with the love of Rupert in England, where there are entire Rupert fan clubs, and where conferences and conventions are held in honour of a bear who is now more than a hundred years old
