[ARTinvestment.RU](https://artinvestment.ru/invest/analytics/20250429%5FRusSales%5FWorld.html?ref=theparnassian.com) has compared the performance of the Russian art market at foreign auctions in the first quarter of 2025 and of 2024\. The report includes the results of auction transactions in works by all artists who were born, worked or are significant in the context of the art history of the Russian Empire, the USSR and Russia.

🖋 Many indicators fell: the total number of lots of Russian art shrank by 15%, the number of selling countries by 20%, and the number of auction houses by 8%; the number of authors whose works were successfully sold declined by 15%, and the overall pool of artists by 14%. At the same time, the average lot price rose by 38%, the average excess over the total estimate increased by 10%, and the average price of a single lot sold rose by an impressive 38% to reach $47.3 thousand. The growth in these figures is read as evidence of a more considered approach to collecting. Collectors choose Russian art less often, but pay more for it. The "superfluous" names, that is, those deserving the collector's attention neither from the artistic nor from the investment point of view, are gradually being washed out, together with the "superfluous" auctions.

🖋 Among artists, the top seller of the first quarter was Tamara Lempicka (a Polish artist of the early twentieth century): her work went for $8.55 million at Christie's. Next came Chagall with a sale in Hong Kong for $4.14 million, and Kandinsky with a powerful excess over the estimate of 161%.

🖋 Among auction houses, Christie's, Sotheby's and Bonhams dominate, but the French players and Hermitage Fine Art of Monaco are visibly gaining strength, a vivid signal of the activity of Russian collectors beyond the "Russian Art Week" in London.

🖋 By country, Great Britain leads, accounting for 65.9% of all sales, followed by Hong Kong. The USA, once the second most important market, now cedes its place to France.
