Having visited Kolomna, it would be foolish not to see the place where the Moskva flows into the Oka, all the more so as it lies practically within the town limits. The surroundings are very picturesque. If you go, the road will take you past the Old Golutvin Monastery, founded at the end of the fourteenth century and associated with the name of Sergius of Radonezh, with its pseudo-Gothic towers of the eighteenth century and its 46-metre bell tower. Next you will come to a floating (a kind of pontoon) bridge across the Moskva, from which there is a splendid view. But to behold the confluence itself, the spit where the Moskva and the Oka meet, you must cover several hundred metres of dreadful country track, rutted, muddy, littered, and impassable for saloon cars and, at any rate, for my jeep, in order to be rewarded with a mountain of building waste, puddles and a neglected patch of grass that goes by the name of a viewing platform. I do not know whom one ought to approach, presumably the government of the Moscow Region, but the confluence of the Moskva and the Oka is, after all, a landmark of geographical significance, so why not bring it into decent order? Many would like to see these two rivers meet.
