# Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has left the Vatican with a small retinue, his secretary and several medical staff to visit his elder brother Georg, aged 96, in Germany, where the latter's health has begun to decline

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has left the Vatican with a small retinue, his secretary and several medical staff to visit his elder brother Georg, aged 96, in Germany, where the latter's health has begun to decline. Benedict commented briefly on this rare absence from his permanent Vatican residence, the Mater Ecclesiae monastery, assigned to him in 2013: “Perhaps this is the last time the Ratzinger brothers will see each other in this world”, and asked that their privacy be respected and that they not be disturbed. Georg and Joseph were ordained priests on the same day, 29 June 1951, and have been very close and devoted to each other all their lives. The Pope Emeritus promised to stay with his brother for as long as necessary
