Pope Francis I in the Jesuit Mother Church of Il Gesù in Rome at the service marking the 400th anniversary of the canonisation of St Teresa of Ávila, Ignatius of Loyola, Isidore the Farmer, Francis Xavier and Philip Neri.

This time the Pope does not preside at the Mass: the service is conducted by the rector of the church, the Jesuit Father Sosa (the old fellow at the microphone), who was once among the 1,000 priests to sign a letter of greeting to Fidel Castro, the persecutor of Catholics in Cuba, and for this earned the nickname of Marxist, Venezuelan communist and modernist.

Nevertheless, the Pope too gave a homily. Francis was heard to say: “Do not be afraid to touch the wounds of modern men and women, for they are the wounds of Christ.”
