The marital history of General Yermolov and his so-called kebin wives, that is, temporary wives, in effect concubines drawn from the local population of the Caucasian territories occupied by the Russian army, deserves a tale of its own. Yermolov's first-born was borne to him by a slave woman, Syuyda; the boy was named Bakhtiyar, or in Russian, Viktor. Yermolov's other two sons, Sever and Klavdy, were born to Totay, who had simply been abducted from her native aul; Peter was borne by Sultanum, and there was also a daughter, Sofia, and a son, Nikolai.

Yermolov himself also had Eastern roots: he descended from the Golden Horde murza Arslan Yermola, who lived in the early sixteenth century.

In fact, Yermolov's illegitimate children, although they received noble status, could not lay claim to recognition in any capacity other than that of wards, until Alexander II granted the celebrated general the right to acknowledge his children as his own and as full hereditary nobles.

Yermolov's eldest son, Viktor Alexeyevich, rose to the rank of general; his son Vladimir also became a general and in 1916 served as military governor of the Dagestan Region. In the 1920s he left Russia, going first to Greece and then to France, where he spent the rest of his days.
