They were standing beside the biggest newspaper stand in the city centre. Not only had Kay not got stuck in a single traffic jam on the way here, he had even parked the car right by the newsstands. Brothers, a man needs a pocket god of his very own to be that lucky. You are likelier to win the lottery than to find a legal parking space in this part of New York at this time of day.
Kay was avidly rummaging through a pile of the yellowest of all the tabloids.
THE POPE OF ROME BECOMES A FATHER, ran the headline. SYNOD IN DISARRAY.
Kay plunged into reading.
"What are you doing?"
Kay put the paper aside and picked up the next one.
MAN EATS HIS OWN HOUSE. NOW THAT'S AN APPETITE!
"Dude, what I really hate is being taken for a sucker." Kay went on methodically studying the articles.
"Hello, orbit! This is Earth calling! Do you read me?"
Kay picked up the next paper.
"Hey, you're not telling me this is what passes for 'hot news'?"
"The finest analytical reporting on this planet," Kay replied absently. "Read the *New York Times* if you turn your nose up at it. They get lucky sometimes too."
