It turns out that the Decembrists' wives, that is, the wives of exiled state criminals, were entitled to a pension under a law of 1846\. After the husband's death they were paid an allowance equal to that which the exile himself had received. True, payment of this relief as a rule ceased when the widow returned from Siberia, to "Russia", as people then put it. Some widows, however, or their relations and friends, petitioned the Third Section by various routes to have the allowance kept up even after a move to Moscow. An exception was made, for example, for Yentaltseva, Lyublinskaya, Kireyeva and Falenberg, on the petition of the Third Section to the Sovereign.
