One of Hugo's descendants said of this house that it is an autograph spread over three floors and a poem in several rooms. Resembling a fairy-tale labyrinth, the house presents Hugo as writer, poet, dramatist, draughtsman and decorator, and truly reflects his creative genius. Symbolism pervades Hauteville House, and everything in it has its meaning: garden gnomes on the mantelpiece, strange wooden sculptures, porcelain jugs, heaps of trinkets, carved panels and secret passages resembling caves. Some call the furnishings the height of absurdity, while others see in them the abode of Quasimodo, a fragile and elusive world of the creative spirit.
