# The Boris and Gleb Monastery in Torzhok from its 11th-century founding to the present

One of the oldest monasteries in Russia, founded, if the hagiographic literature is to be believed, in the first third of the eleventh century, is the Monastery of Saints Boris and Gleb in the town of Torzhok. No buildings earlier than the seventeenth century survive on its grounds; it is known for certain only that two side-chapels of the Church of Saints Boris and Gleb were built under Ivan the Terrible. In the Soviet years the monastery housed a strict-regime prison, and from the 1970s a medical labour “prophylactorium”. Today the cloister is slowly being restored and, little by little, recovering something of its former grandeur
