Having travelled across almost the whole of Russia in recent years, I set foot on the soil of Boldino, to my own surprise, only this winter. And if we pass over a lengthy description of the protected places of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, where the silence laughs handsomely at the light that once inspired Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, I really did feel myself a part of Russian literature.

Every stone, every window, every tiny particle of the world order here brings Pushkin to mind. Here, where he wrote nearly half of his finest works, the "Little Tragedies", "The Tales of Belkin", "The Bronze Horseman", "The Queen of Spades", the last chapters of "Eugene Onegin" and practically all the fairy tales, more than 60 pieces in all.

Indeed, no writing person could remain indifferent to the thought that these same snow-covered avenues once led Pushkin to new ideas; in Boldino it is simply impossible not to feel the breath of Russian literature.

But amid the splendour of the old buildings and the charm of low-ceilinged rooms with Russian sofas, what do we notice with our professional eye? Quite right: the preservation of the monument, the authenticity of the historical setting, the genuineness of the landscape. In 2024 a two-year reconstruction was completed at the museum-reserve: the main house and the church in Lvovka were renewed, modern exhibitions with interactive and multimedia elements were created, and the serf office, the bathhouse, the bridges, the paths and the lighting were repaired, while the park was landscaped. And quite recently the Boldino museum-reserve became the winner in the "Urban Environment" category of the "Made in Russia" award, with which the publication Snob marks each year the most significant Russian projects.

I left the estate with the feeling that now, like Pushkin once did, I certainly need a corner for reflection, and preferably in one of the most beautiful places in Russia.
