The figurine was named Nefertiti at once, as soon as it emerged from the ground during excavations at the settlement of Kondon-pochta. So strong was the impression made on the archaeologists by the beauty of this ceramic woman. The Neolithic statuette was so unlike anything ever found before that at first some even called it a forgery, until several similar figurines finally convinced the sceptics of the find's authenticity.

This figurine and others of the same type, found later, are also known as the Amur Venuses.

Once again I marvel at how poorly we know our own great monuments. This statuette, tender, graceful and highly artistic, could at the very least have taken the place of the bust of Nefertiti, made several millennia later, on the covers of textbooks.
