The German Olearius witnessed a visit by a Kabardian delegation to the Tsar's court in 1634\. What particularly struck Olearius was that the Kabardians arrived in modest array and with no particular occasion or pretext for conversation with the Tsar's officials, yet were presented with silk kaftans.

Although in the seventeenth century the North Caucasus was not part of the Muscovite state, relations of vassalage and alliance nevertheless existed with Kabarda and the Circassian aristocrats, and, given the friction between the Turks and the Persians, the Kabardian nobles naturally had something to discuss in Moscow, including the Crimean question, Ukraine and the Shamkhalate. So the costly gifts of fur garments for the numerous envoys from the North Caucasus may be explained by the urgency of the geopolitical questions in the region.

All the same, Adam Olearius writes in his «Description of a Journey to Muscovy» that these Caucasian envoys came mostly for the sake of clothes and gifts, knowing that they would always be given something.
