...Preaching complete non-interference in religious and state affairs, Freemasonry, with its closed character, its secret signs and rites, constituted a kind of separate secret state, which in governments was bound to arouse various suspicions and apprehensions, and was therefore subjected by them to prohibitions and persecutions. These persecutions began everywhere especially from the time when Freemasonry started to lose its original character, when other, not altogether pure motives began to be joined to its lofty moral works, when there appeared within it a multitude of various orders, which received different constitutions, forms and names, and in particular when political intrigues were introduced into it, introduced into Freemasonry by the Jesuits. The Masonic society of the Illuminati, founded by Professor Weishaupt in Bavaria in 1776, was especially distinguished by these intrigues.

<...>

In Russia Freemasonry appeared in the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna, and under Catherine the Great, in 1772, the first Russian "Grand Lodge" was opened in Saint Petersburg.

<...>

It should also be noted that the tutor of Alexander I, the Swiss La Harpe, was a Freemason. Was it not he who instilled in the Emperor Alexander the Blessed, his pupil, a favourable disposition towards the Freemasons? Nevertheless, at the end of Alexander I's reign Freemasonry in Russia was prohibited. The reason for this prohibition was the following circumstance. Count Haugwitz, who stood at the head of the Masonic lodges of Prussia, Poland and Russia and who left them when their true aims were revealed to him, presented in 1822, at the congress of the Holy Alliance in Verona, a memorandum in which it is said that the aim of this society is "to attain world domination, to take possession of all thrones and to make Sovereigns the instruments of its purposes."

<...>

As for the secret side, which Freemasonry carefully conceals from the uninitiated, one cannot fail to see that the true aims of Freemasonry and its real, specifically Masonic activity differ as heaven from earth from its outward show, which has such an attractive influence on morally inclined people.

<...>

the most that one can hear from a Freemason, as the maximum permitted to him for disclosure, is the assertion: "Yes, Freemasons exist. But it is a philanthropic brotherhood, you know, something like General Booth's 'Salvation Army'." But you will never hear an admission of the essence of Freemasonry, that it is a political organisation standing everywhere and in every place at the head of all destructive political parties, that the Masonic lodges are a behind-the-scenes areopagus, claiming to crush thrones and depose earthly rulers."

<...>

...for a more persistent and open introduction into the state life of various countries of their revolutionary aims. And for this they founded a new order, the Illuminati, in Germany.

<...>

There is no need to point out that modern socialism and anarchism grew and gained strength from this teaching.
