Not long ago, at a lecture by a very educated woman, the question was put of how enormous canvases were carried through the narrow lanes of Moscow to be hung in the mansion of a famous collector. How astonished I was that this lady-in-waiting of the writing profession could not answer what seemed such a simple question, but I kept my head down, so as not to set the esteemed speaker against me. The answer is elegant and lies quite on the surface: the paintings were rolled onto large wooden and [plywood rollers](https://theparnassian.com/foto-iz-arkhiva-russkogo-muzeia-tak-bolshie-polotna-gotovilis-k-konservatsii-i-perevozke-ikh-nakatyvali-na-bezuprechno-gladkie-fanernye-valy-perekladyvaia-plotnoi-bumagoi-i-sshivaia-kra/?ref=theparnassian.com), and that is how they were transported. Canvases were carried in the same way from one museum to another, and during the evacuation they were packed in the same manner.
