in **1847** Queen Victoria conferred the **hereditary title of baronet** on a representative of the British branch of the Rothschild family, **Anthony Nathan de Rothschild**. **After the death of the childless Sir Anthony** the title passed to his nephew, **Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild**, on whom in **1885** Queen Victoria bestowed the **hereditary title of Baron Rothschild**
