# I don't know about you, but I only like the alphabet of Abraham; Enoch's and Ezra's seem off somehow, over-engineered

Each of these alphabets promises a direct line to heaven. Some to Abraham, some to the angels, and some simply to something of the otherworldly sort.

Once you start looking into it, it turns out that all these celestial scripts were devised not on Sinai but in some European cellar of the Renaissance. And not for prophecies, but so that the neighbour should not peep at what you had jotted down in your "magical diary".

The alphabets of Abraham, Enoch and Ezra are often called angelic or mystical. They are linked with biblical names, but in reality they are not ancient languages at all, rather symbolic writing systems created for magical and occult practices.

The alphabet of Abraham, known as the Celestial Alphabet, appeared in Kabbalistic circles. It was ascribed to Abraham, but was in fact created by mystics of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its symbols resemble a blend of Hebrew and Aramaic script. It was used in astrological and sacred records.

The alphabet of Enoch appeared in the 16th century thanks to the English astrologer and magus John Dee and his medium Edward Kelley. They claimed to have received the language directly from the angels. The Enochian language has its own letters and grammar, and is considered a means of communicating with higher beings.

The alphabet of Ezra, also called the Theban alphabet or the script of Honorius, is ascribed to the prophet Ezra, but first appears in the treatises of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. Witches and European occultists used it to encipher spells and private notes.

All three alphabets embody the idea of secret knowledge and of a link between man and the heavenly through the written word. Each alphabet promises contact with the divine. And yet one cannot shake the feeling that the info-gypsies of their day were simply selling courses on "How to Talk to the Higher Powers"
