It is not every day that experts discover a new masterpiece of the seventeenth century. A painting created by Rubens around 1614–1615 has been found among the belongings of the late owner of a Parisian town house. In 400 years the picture has survived in excellent condition.

After X-ray examination and analysis of the pigments, the experts confirmed that this is a genuine work by Rubens, previously known only from engravings. The painting will be included in the next supplement to the catalogue of the artist's works.

The head of the Parisian auction house related that he stumbled upon the painting during a routine valuation of the estate and at once understood that this find would change his career. At the auction on 30 November the painting was sold for €2.3 million
