At the weekend in Edinburgh a woman was arrested for holding a placard that read: "Fuck imperialism, abolish the monarchy". In Oxford a man was arrested for walking out of a church during the proclamation of King Charles III and shouting: "Who elected him?" The police said it was a potential breach of the peace. And while The Guardian muses on the fortunes of British republicanism, which used to be a perfectly respectable position and has now become grounds for detention, we may recall the present British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, who in the 1990s was a Liberal Democrat and cried out against the very idea of appointing a head of state merely because he had been born into a particular family. And if one has no wish to ponder how, in the twenty-first century, one of the world's advanced nations can be ruled by a man on a golden throne wearing a crown worth £20 million, one can imagine what would have happened in Russia for a Not My King placard; or rather, one can simply remember. We are not so very different after all, are we?
