The silver ferula with a crucifix was first used by Saint Paul VI in 1965, on the occasion of the closing of the Second Vatican Council.

Saint John Paul II made use of the papal ferula from the very beginning of his pontificate. In the last years of his life the pontiff leaned on it even within his private apartments, under the watch of his physicians.

Benedict XVI used a ferula with a golden cross that had formerly belonged to Blessed Pius IX. Leo XIV celebrated his first Mass as pope with the ferula of Benedict XVI, and also made use of the ferula created for Saint Paul VI.

The new papal ferula used by Pope Leo XIV preserves continuity with the staffs of his predecessors. Christ is depicted no longer pinned by the nails of the Passion, but with a glorified body, at the moment of his ascent to the Father. The ferula is engraved with the motto «In illo uno unum» («In the One Christ we are one»).
