# At New York's Old Masters sale, a small panel of "Hell" by a follower of Bosch went for $537,000 against an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000

There is, in principle, no genuine Bosch on the open market: not a single fully attributed painting or drawing by him has come up at auction since 1985, everything moves through private channels, and the surviving works of the master number some two dozen and a half worldwide, all of them in museums of the Prado's calibre.

Followers of Bosch, however, are legion. The manufacture of copies and variations was set up in his own lifetime, by his family and pupils, because his bestiary of demons and sinners was in demand at once, and in the twentieth century the Surrealists raised him on the shield anew. A peculiar paradox of the collector: the original is out of reach, so the market fights over the imitators, and they are on the rise. At a sale in Cologne in 2025, "The Vision of Tundale" by one follower of Bosch went for €906,000\. These works enjoy recognition: museums and curators take them, and even collectors of contemporary art
