In some portraits of Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte, known as one of the three crowned courtesans, Pauline has short hair. In this portrait by Robert Lefèvre, attention is drawn to an unusual headdress: brocade ribbons adorn Pauline's closely cropped head. The story of Pauline's locks is linked to yellow fever in the West Indies, where she lived with her husband, General Leclerc. When he died of the disease, Pauline cut off her long hair and covered her husband's body with it. After this she wore her hair short for a time, and she is depicted so in several portraits.
