At a lecture by the publisher Natalia Semenova at Club 418 I learnt that Vermeer's "[Allegory of Faith](https://t.me/captainpaleo/3401?ref=theparnassian.com)" was bought as a painting of dubious attribution, or at any rate with a forged signature on it. It found its way into the collection of Dmitry Ivanovich Shchukin, who all his life dreaded buying a fake, and Shchukin soon resolved to part with the canvas, selling it for a ridiculous 900 marks to a professor who was certain that it came from Vermeer's brush and managed to prove it.
