The sculptural group, 4.5 m high, has left its pedestal for the first time in 200 years. The monument has been dismantled for restoration. The restoration of the sculptures is expected to last until November 2022, at a cost of 55 million roubles. The money for the restoration, as for the creation of the monument, was raised by the whole nation, though a substantial part was allocated by the Ministry of Culture. The work is being carried out by the Interregional Scientific Restoration Art Directorate. In the course of it, the technological framework of the figures and the remnants of the moulding mixture will be removed through technological openings, the inner and outer surfaces of the sculptures and bas-reliefs will be restored, and the framework of the plinth will be replaced.

A special pavilion has been erected over the monument in advance, with structures strong enough to handle so massive a sculpture.

The monument was unveiled in 1818, and in 1931 it was moved in its entirety from the Upper Trading Rows to St Basil's Cathedral.
